The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
