Keith Baker along with Monte Cook Are Instructing Sessions at DMU

Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting immersive events where experienced game masters run fantasy roleplaying games in old manors in England and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are highly favored among long-time dungeon masters who infrequently find the chance to participate as players themselves, and they often look for guidance from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to handling difficult situations at the table.

In response, the coordinators began designing a organized method to answer these inquiries, which led to the establishment of Dungeon Master University. The first session is planned for early January 2026 at an Atlanta campus.

“There are numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and learn quite a lot, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction alongside peers in game mastering, where direct communication with faculty instructors and your peers who are probably in the same boat and aim to improve their skills,” explained the dean of Dungeon Master University.

Workshop Options and Ticket Packages

Game masters can opt for tiers ranging from just under $1,000 to $2,500, according to the level of access they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes one of four courses:

  • Core Techniques: Covers the essentials of leading a game.
  • Story Arc Development: Centers on building persistent adventures.
  • Worldbuilding: Concentrates on the crafting of environments.
  • Career Building: Designed for dungeon masters who want to learn more about the gaming industry.

All workshops includes eight hours of instruction split over a weekend.

“The classes are structured so that you walk away with tangible results, probably greater confidence, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they’re not just static videos. These are sessions that you can join, learn from, and then go right back home the next week and implement in your local game.”

Seasoned Educators

Many sessions are led by a pair of experts. Universe creation is led by Monte Cook and Keith Baker, both teaching the skill of universe design.

Professional development includes four different teachers, such as an author on gaming puzzles, Clint McElroy, and a pioneering DM. The extra instructors is meant to provide specialized information to students with specific goals.

“Various attendees want to launch their own live gameplay show and share their stories with the world, several plan to produce and create new material,” Carl stated. “Several only seek to ask, How do I get to be a DM at a program like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Higher Tiers

A $1,500 gold tier offers access to a introductory event, a starter kit, and a brief one-on-one appointment with one of the faculty. This represents the debut of the program, though the organizers has previously run Castle Days during breaks between campaigns at their castle events.

“It would be possible to organize an complete event just on office hours for career game masters,” Carl mentioned. “It's unclear if that’s the most effective utilization of all participants' schedule – I believe the structured learning and the lab work is extremely important – but I think it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”

The $2.5K platinum tier provides an hour of one-on-one time and the possibility to run a game for a small group plus one of the faculty members, who will then offer feedback and guidance.

“The goal is for the teacher to review any element is focused on: I struggle with improvisation or I get blocked in this kind of combat situation. May I present a scenario for you and receive input on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl detailed. “Alternatively they want to obtain critique and guidance on a specific world that they’ve been building.”

Future Plans

Responses from the first event will help guide upcoming academy workshops. Carl mentioned that potential adjustments could include expanding one-on-one sessions, lengthening the event to 72 hours, or testing varied class arrangements.

“I hope that we do this regularly,” Carl said. “I really want to see numerous academy events in a single year, in different cities, and in different countries. The feedback has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with the results so far and I believe it would be wonderful to be able to conduct this in conjunction with big conventions.”
