Pacific Bluefin Tuna Sells for Unprecedented Price of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the year.
The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which operates restaurants across the country and overseas.
"The first tuna signals a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a familiar bidder at the annual new year's auction.
Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is renowned for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price escalated in no time."
This most recent acquisition tops his own notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to shatter his personal record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be available at its eateries throughout the country.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.
"I feel like I've commenced the year in a positive way after tasting something so lucky as the year starts," said one happy diner.
