Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster final round of competition.

Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over Fleetwood.

Final Round Drama

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.

Play-Off Climax

This set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.

To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Other Performances

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdies of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
