Three Lions Coach Shares The Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, the England assistant coach featured at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed supporting the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. His journey from player to coach started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He realized his calling.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey is incredible. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a reputation for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he declares. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of changes but to surpass them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly during that time. It’s to take it from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To create a system for effective use in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the versatility, the strength, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to play freely as they do in club games, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst to get better knows no bounds. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, since his group featured big names including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out the most challenging environments imaginable to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included impressed and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of nearly all assistants except Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
